Secondary Gain –
It’s Not OK to
Lose the Weight
If it’s not safe for your client to take the weight off and keep it off, they will fail to reach and maintain their goal weight. The reasons people need to keep weight on are limitless. Often, clients are unaware—even shocked—when they realize that their weight is protection, and they really don't want to let go of the excess weight. It's as though there are two people within them—two parts of themselves. One part wants to release the excess weight, and another part wants that instant satisfaction that sugary, fatty foods provide. Secondary Gain can be deep seeded and a major obstacle in a client’s ability to let go of the weight and a challenge for you as the therapist. Roger Moore, MA, PhD, will examine Secondary Gain, how to uncover it and offer techniques so that your clients feel safe in obtaining and maintaining their ideal weight.
